Safety first: if there is a gas smell, sparking, or a sagging ceiling, leave the area and call 911 or your utility before anything else.
What to do right now
- Stop the water. Close the fixture valve or the home's main shut-off. In many valley homes it is near the front hose bib, in the garage, or in a box near the street.
- Make it safe. Stay out of standing water near outlets and appliances.
- Document. Photograph and video the source and every wet room before moving anything.
- Call your insurer to ask about their claim process.
- Start drying. Move rugs, furniture, and electronics out of wet areas.
- Get the right help. A licensed plumber fixes the source; a licensed restoration contractor measures moisture and dries walls and floors.
How our referral works
We are a referral service, not a contractor. When you call or send a request, we connect you with an independent restoration contractor licensed by the CSLB who serves your city. You contract with and pay that contractor directly, and you are always welcome to choose someone else.
Why desert homes still get water damage
The Coachella Valley is dry, but most water damage here starts inside the house. Most homes sit on concrete slabs with supply lines under or inside them, and the valley's hard water and heat are tough on plumbing over time. Water heaters, washer hoses, ice-maker lines, AC condensate drains, and slab leaks are everyday causes. Summer storms and rare tropical systems, such as Tropical Storm Hilary in August 2023, can also send floodwater and mud into homes near washes.
Many homes in the valley are seasonal or second homes. A leak that starts in June can run unnoticed until the owner returns in the fall. See our second-home leak guide.
