Rain is rare in the valley, but when it comes it can be intense. In August 2023, Tropical Storm Hilary brought flooding and mud to parts of the valley, including neighborhoods in Cathedral City, and closed roads across the region. Summer storms can do the same on a smaller scale.
After floodwater gets in
- Do not enter if water is near electrical panels or outlets, or if there is a gas smell.
- Never drive or walk through flooded roads or washes.
- Treat outside floodwater as contaminated. Wear gloves and boots.
- Photograph and video everything before cleanup.
- Call your insurer; standard policies often exclude outside flooding, which is usually covered by separate flood insurance.
- Ask a restoration contractor about wet drywall, insulation, and flooring, which often cannot be saved after floodwater.
Before the next storm
- Know whether your home is near a wash or drainage channel. FEMA flood maps are at msc.fema.gov.
- Keep drainage paths, gutters, and scuppers clear.
- Store photos of your home and policy documents in the cloud.
- Ask your agent about flood insurance; there is often a waiting period before a new policy starts.
